What to Do if You Discover a Leak
Turn Off the Water Supply
Locate your internal stopcock, usually found under the kitchen sink or near where the mains water pipe enters your property. Turn it clockwise to shut off the flow. If you cannot find or operate the internal stopcock, you can turn off the supply at the external stop valve, which is often located in a small chamber near your property boundary or built into the pavement by your water meter. You may need a stopcock key to operate this valve.
Switch Off Electricity If Necessary
If water is near electrical outlets, switches, or the consumer unit, turn off the electricity at the fuse box immediately to avoid any risk of shock.
Drain the System (If Severe)
Open all cold taps to drain remaining water from the pipes. Flush toilets once. Leave hot taps alone if you have a hot water cylinder; instead, turn off the boiler and immersion heater.
Contain the Water
Place buckets, bowls, or towels to catch dripping water. If the leak is through a ceiling, you can gently pierce a small hole to allow water to escape in a controlled way, preventing a wider ceiling collapse.
Protect Belongings
Move valuables, furniture, or electrical appliances away from the affected area to limit damage.
